Helistrat Completes Carbon Offsetting

Helistrat has further reduced its environmental impact by offsetting 140 tonnes CO2e through projects in the UK and Brazil.

 UK Tree Planting Programme

Helistrat has planted 140 native British broad-leaved trees in the UK to directly offset our activities in the UK whilst acknowledging our global impacts. Planting trees provides broad environmental benefits, helping provide wildlife habitat for many hundreds of years, and passing on to future generations a fascinating and highly valuable ecological heritage.

Trees also absorb the atmospheric carbon as part of the process of photosynthesis, which enables them to grow. Through this process, carbon dioxide is converted into stored carbon, and this is why trees are sometimes referred to as ‘carbon sinks’. By taking this carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, trees clean the air, and offset our polluting lifestyles.

Portel-Para Reducing Deforestation Project in Brazil

 The project is located within the Amazon, the largest remaining rainforest on our planet. The Amazon is known for its amazing biodiversity; home to 10% of all species, including some endangered species that rely on it for their survival.

The Portel-Pará REDD project is working to prevent unplanned deforestation in native forests, which has occurred due to logging, squatting and attempts to implement pastures. The project is expected to avoid over 22 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent greenhouse gas emissions over a 40-year period. This will be achieved by managing the land in the form of a “private conservation reserve”, through a rigorous monitoring and enforcement.

Through a detailed evaluation of a business’s carbon dioxide emissions, which is where a high proportion of the World’s carbon emissions come from collectively, and from both a practical and ethical stance, understanding a businesses environmental impacts plays a vital role in the transition to a low-carbon economy. Science Based Targets encourage businesses to align their carbon footprint reduction aims to take account of a fair share of the available climate budget. This also encourages other businesses to do the same and Helistrat can support all its partners to adopt the same approach.

Having a Science Based Targets approach also helps businesses save operating costs by reducing their energy usage as well as their potential Carbon Tax liability in the future. In addition to this, it is a visible demonstration that an organisation takes sustainability very seriously, enhancing their brands and value with stakeholders and customers.

The evaluation process that Helistrat undertook was to calculate the Carbon Dioxide equivalence (CO2e) effects of its buildings, travel and transportation on the environment. This detailed approach allows us to track our impacts on an annual basis and demonstrate how we are seeking to minimise CO2 emissions where possible.

Commenting on the decision to offset the company’s carbon production, Helistrat’s Head of Sustainability, Nathan Gray, said:
